Why 5.0: Built to replace the 911 and outlived by it — the grand tourer Porsche's air-cooled faithful ignored for decades. Maintenance bills cull the pretenders; the survivors tour properly.

Sound

The M28 V8 was voiced for a grand tourer: a deep cultured hum that swells rather than barks, and stays composed at speed. But Porsche damped it deliberately and it is finished just past 6,000 rpm. Pleasant company rather than a reason to buy the car.

Child seats · ISOFIX

Anywhere in the carNot available

Built before ISOFIX existed, so there are no anchor points at all. A child seat here is a seatbelt installation, and the belt geometry of the period was not designed with one in mind.

Derived from production years and seating layout, not a per-car source. ISOFIX was standardised as ISO 13216 in 1997, required on new EU model types from 2011 and on all new EU cars from 2014.

The long version

For years these were the cheapest way into a V8 Porsche grand tourer, and the low buy-in attracted owners who then discovered the maintenance bill was where the real price lived — timing belts, cooling systems, and interior electronics that have quietly bankrupted more than one bargain purchase. What survived that filter is a committed touring community, not a trailer-queen one; 928 club events are built around road trips, not static shows. The 911 faithful spent decades treating it as the black sheep, which left it to develop an ownership culture entirely on its own terms.
