Why 7.3: The homologation-special drivetrain in a body America could actually buy. Early markups faded fast, and the cars go to people who use launch control on gravel, as intended.

Sound

The G16E triple has a genuine three-cylinder off-beat thrum and Toyota fitted three exhaust outlets to make a point of it. But it is a turbocharged 1.6 and much of what reaches the cabin is piped in. Distinctive for a hatch, thin beside any six.

The long version

Dealers tried the GR86 markup playbook on the Corolla too, and it worked for about a model year before enough enthusiast money walked away and pricing came back to earth — which filtered out the flippers faster than most homologation specials manage. What is left is a buyer pool that wanted a GR Yaris and settled for the version Toyota actually sold here, then used it exactly like the rally program that inspired it: a winter beater with all-wheel drive and a limited-slip diff, gravel roads included. It is a driver's car that never quite got the chance to become a garage piece.
