Why 3.8: Alfa took a Maserati floorpan, a Ferrari-built 4.7 V8, a carbon-fibre body and a rear transaxle, and built 500 coupes. It is beautiful and it sounds extraordinary; the single-clutch automated gearbox is the reason nobody calls it a great driver's car. Bought as an appreciating object from day one.

Sound

A cross-plane 4.7 built alongside Ferrari's V8s, breathing through a bypass exhaust tuned harder than any Maserati got, climbing to 7,500 rpm with nothing in the pipes to muffle it — which is why it outranks the turbocharged F40 and 288 GTO. But the crank gives it bass where a flat-plane shrieks, so it stops under the Gallardo.

There aren't any — strict two-seater.

Front passenger seatVaries

The only position there is, so makers of this era equip it: expect a passenger-airbag cut-off (key switch or occupant sensing) as standard, because there is no rear row to point children to. Whether the seat itself carries ISOFIX anchors is maker-specific — Porsche bundles them with its child-seat preparation, Ferrari sold them as an option, others are belt-mount only with the airbag off.

Derived from production years and seating layout, not a per-car source. ISOFIX was standardised as ISO 13216 in 1997, required on new EU model types from 2011 and on all new EU cars from 2014.

The long version

The 8C started as a 2003 concept nobody expected to reach production, and the production version kept the concept's proportions almost intact — which is rare enough to explain a good deal of what has happened to it since. Underneath is a shortened Maserati GranTurismo steel floorpan with a carbon-fibre body bonded on, a front-mid mounted 4.7-litre version of the Ferrari-built F136 V8 making 450 PS, and a six-speed transaxle at the back for near-even weight distribution. What that transaxle contains is the problem: a single-clutch automated manual, already dated in 2007, which shifts slowly enough that every road test spends a paragraph on it. Alfa built 500 coupes and 500 Spiders, sent 84 coupes and 35 Spiders to the United States through Maserati dealers as its formal North American return, and sold every one before delivery. Ownership followed the pattern that sets. These are low-mileage cars — five-figure odometers are unusual, four-figure ones are not — held in collections alongside other things, brought out for events, and traded through specialist dealers rather than driven into the ground. Values dipped in the early 2010s when the gearbox reputation was still fresh, then turned hard once the noise became the headline, and an 8C now costs more than it did new. The engine deserves that. The rest of the car got carried along with it.
