Why 3.8: Fixed roof, flared arches, a hand-finished 400 hp V8 — AMG skunkworks at its strangest. Rarity turned it into collector bait; few see the road.

Sound

The Black Series strips the SLK to a shell and opens the 5.4 M113 right up, so the cross-plane V8 arrives raw where the standard 55 only woofles. But it is a three-valve single-cam design running out at 7,200 rpm — depth and volume, not top-end reach.

8-cylinder · naturally aspirated · 7,200 rpm redline · rated 7.8 / 10 for engine sound

Rear seatsNot available

There aren't any — strict two-seater.

Front passenger seatNot available

No ISOFIX anchors on the front passenger seat. Mercedes fits the AKSE transponder system instead — an approved Mercedes child seat, secured by the seatbelt, is recognized automatically and the airbag switches off.

The R171 has no rear seats at all, so AKSE up front is the only factory-sanctioned way to carry a child.

The long version

Nobody cross-shops this against an SL; buyers seek it out specifically because AMG built about as few as it could get away with, and that scarcity is now the whole sales pitch. Values bottomed out around 2013 and have roughly tripled since, the kind of curve that turns owners into custodians rather than drivers. It carries no badges here, which is itself the tell: not daily-driven enough for Daily Driven, not fast enough on paper for Screamer, just a rare fixed-roof coupe quietly appreciating in a climate-controlled garage while the rest of the AMG lineup gets used up.
