Why 5.0: Over 2.1 tonnes, and the speed arrives through a lot of mediation. But the market has stopped speculating on it entirely, and it gets used — the rare 2+2 you can put a child seat in the front of.

Sound

The hot-vee 4.0 still bites on a cold start and the sports exhaust pops on the overrun. But this is a two-tonne hybrid tuned for refinement, with turbos buried in the vee and an electric motor covering the low-speed running, so most of the drive passes near silently.

Child seats · ISOFIX

Front passenger seatStandard

ISOFIX and i-Size anchors on the passenger seat itself — the owner's manual documents fitting a child seat here directly. The airbag handles itself: occupant sensing detects the seat and switches the airbag off automatically, no key to turn.

Rear seatsStandard

Both rear positions carry ISOFIX too, with one caveat the spec sheet won't tell you: the buckets are shallow and the backrests near-vertical, so wide child seats don't physically fit — narrow frames only. Mercedes sizes these seats for people up to 1.50 m either way.

Rare among 2+2s: the front passenger seat is a first-class child-seat position, not a belt-and-hope fallback.

The long version

The R232 is the first SL AMG developed itself rather than inherited, with rear-axle steering and a 2+2 cabin where the R230 had a folding metal roof and a softer brief — which is why the trade-in pattern skews toward former SL owners who did not expect an AMG. Its ownership story is the opposite of speculation: dealer markups at launch collapsed into incentives, and the car has shed roughly a third of its sticker in three years, one of the steeper curves in this class. Nobody is banking one. What is left is a heavy, quick, comfortable roadster that gets driven — front and rear ISOFIX both documented, which puts it in a small group of cars on this index you can genuinely carry a child in. It scores in the middle because that is what the ownership evidence says, even though the driving experience is mediated enough to keep its involvement rating modest.
